This unique blend was created at the leading of the Holy Spirit. The oil is prayed over and consecrated for the use of anointing — setting people and things apart for God. Jesus set an example of laying on of hands when He prayed for the sick: "At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying His hands on each one, He healed them" (Luke 4:40). Mark 6:13, Luke 7:38, and 1 John 2:20 give examples of the disciples anointing the sick. The book of James teaches us to pray for the sick: "Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord" (James 5:14). We can still anoint each other with oil today. Our faith along with this act of worship will create the atmosphere for miracles — God is still healing and performing miracles today. Anointing follows the example of Scripture. Apply a small amount of the oil to the forehead or hands as you pray over the person or the object, consecrating it in the name of Jesus. The oil carries no power of its own — it is our faith, together with this act of worship, that creates the atmosphere for God to move.
The book of James teaches us to pray for the sick: “Is any sick among you? … anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.” (James 5:14)
